I stumbled upon your blog while se...Hello, Rebecca. I stumbled upon your blog while searching online for the book "Through a Harsh Dawn" by Henk Leffelaar. It was one of only two reviews I managed to unearth. I know it is many years now since you posted the review, and it was interesting to read through what came out of that original post! The internet is truly a remarkable tool for putting people and facts together - I sometimes wonder how we ever fared without it! Well, just in case you see this, and also for the sake of anyone else who might stumble across this blog, I just wanted to respond to the remark you made in passing that after the war "Britain did not help" in Indonesia. Rebecca, it is not your fault, as this period of history is so unknown to most people, and you yourself admit that you know next to nothing about the war in the Far East, but let me tell you that you are far from correct when you made that statement! The British, much against their will, because they should have been repatriated after having been in India and fighting a hard campaign in Burma, were deployed in Java and undertook most of the work of liberating the camps, which was a terrible job, as the rebel Indonesians were so hostile and would not co-operate. Many Brits lost their lives in horrible ways, many camps were not even located or liberated for up to a year after the war, and many internees were murdered in cold blood by the locals, so the whole operation was an extremely difficult and sensitive mission to carry out, and took tremendous patience and diplomacy. I know all about this because I am actually a product of this remarkable period of history. My mother was one of the young Dutch women liberated from the camps in Java, and my father a serving RAF officer. You can read all about it in a tremendously interesting and readable book called "...and we thought the war was over" by David Lee, and if you are interested in further reading about Sumatra, from the women's camps point of view, try to get hold of a copy of "Song of Survival" by Helen Colijn. This book was later made in to a film called "Paradise Road" with Glenn Close and Cate Blanchett. In fact it was in this book that I found the reference to "Through a Harsh Dawn" which set me searching for it. There is so much more I could say and share with you, but perhaps that will do for starters. Some remarkable music came out of the women's camp in Sumatra, which is still sung today by women's choirs and is accessible on youtube. I really hope you will try to research more about this fascinating aspect of WW2, and help to make the facts known. With very best wishes, Mary GoddardAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07019820892571361528noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7659305250034768123.post-75003674587846245762017-01-08T11:29:32.344-05:002017-01-08T11:29:32.344-05:00Great history.
