On Writing- Inspired by Picasso

Yesterday I walked into my daughter's school and saw the daily quote. It was one from Pablo Picasso and it said

"All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."

My immediate reaction to this is that it applies to writing too. We are all writers once we learn to read and write. The problem is how to remain a writer once we grow up. I am a writer. My problem is that in order to write I need space to do it. I need to have time to think, time to be quiet, time to daydream, time to write. I cannot write usually if I am in a rush. I certainly can't write something long like a short story or a novel if I don't have time to immerse myself into my thoughts. Writing comes from a place in me usually that is separate from the mommy-me that is usually running my life. It is hard to get to that place most of the time. Even now.

Looking at Picasso's quotes about art I see a lot of them (not all certainly) apply to writing as well as art. Makes sense since writing IS an art.

I really miss writing. I need to find more time to do it. I need to find more time to "do nothing" so that I can do the writing that comes after the doing nothing.
